When it comes to No Code and Low Code, we find that everyone will be very happy. Such tools are actually very attractive to non-technical people and people who would not write programs, because they may understand other things. They may be experts for real estate, or for the construction industry, they are very clear about the logic that the system should have. When such a tool gave them a magic wand and empower them to facile their work by designing their own system, they became the people who embraced No Code and Low Code technology most enthusiastically.

With the popularity of the concept, it seems that everything we’ve experienced in the past can be called as No Code. For example, we can’t build websites in the past without coding, but now there is a website builder that allows us to build websites. Is this a No Code? Originally, I had to write lines of codes to develop a shopping cart or a shopping website. Now various tools allow people who can’t write a program to build a shopping website with easy drag and drop. Is this a No Code way?

But if defined in this way, all cloud services can be called as no code. In this article, the author will share some personal views on the boundary of no-code. After the careful consideration, the author probably divided no-code into three categories:

The first is that there was originally a trend called “Bring your own device”, BYOD, and the trend later gradually became “BYOA”, Bring your own application. Everyone brings their personal habits to work.

For example, Jack used to use Google Drive to manage his files, and he get to the office to share his files, this is the time that Jack introduced his own using apps to his colleagues. Which is a more personal way of Bring your own application to the office, in other words, it is non-information departments help their enterprises import some productivity tools.

Going further, this is not just an individual behavior, but the entire company and the entire team must maintain together. We have just talked about the website builder and e-commerce’s shopping cart tools. Integrated tools like Wix, Shopify or even Zapier and IFTTT are used together by a whole company or a team in this level.

The first two things do have a feature in common, that is, although you don’t need to write a program, but what you can do is very restrictive. For example, with website builder, you can only complete websites and shopping carts, you can only do e-commerce, you can only manage documents with a Dropbox, and you can only take notes with Evernote. In fact, these kinds of products are designed to do some certain things.

Finally, one step further is the No Code in my mind. We have tools such as form builder, app builder, process automation etc. What these kinds of applications can do will be slightly wider. A form can be the most basic “input data” or “maintenance data” element in a database application,
and there are more possibilities for what form can grow into. For example, a database system such as CRM, ERP system, HR system, or KM (knowledge base) system in the company may be made by some forms and flows and finally become a system according to your needs.
